How do you wire a heatpump directly to a new furnace, eliminating the heating aspect of it, just using cooling....and a single stage t-stat????

Wire your single stage thermostats so that the reversing valve is energized when you call for cooling. Hook your reversing valve wire up to your compressor wire (normally yellow). And you also need your 24v wire (normally red). Thats all you need.

Take the coil off and replace with a magnet.
Or if you can pull the solinoid apart, just take out the plunger and spring. and bridge the wiring.???????????

If you have a heat pump and a gas furnace, why don't you just add a fossil fuel board and you will have a duel-fuel system. This is more efficient and will add value to your home while saving you on your energy bills.
It's not difficult, and the energy savings is well worth it. Especially if you already have the heat pump.
Just a thought, :)

Wire the the system just like a standard "A/C only System".
Exception:
If the reversing valve is default for heat (most are) you must have a constant voltage to the cond. unit to keep the reversing valve energized at all times to prevent noise from equalization when the system cycles off,
IE: Y=Contactor (Thermostat Cool)
R=Hot to Reversing Valve (transformer 24volt)
W=(Transformer Common)

You would power R,C,Y and O on the heatpump. Y and O could be powered from the Y terminal of a single stage thermostat and R and C will come from the furnace. On some models R is not required however nothing can be damaged from powering it.

rheem/ruud equipment energizes the reversing valve in heat mode.
the wire is blue on the heat pump condenser. the purple wire is defrost heat (dont confuse the two or even connect either for that matter). this would be the wiring scenario > Y from tstat to Yellow wire at heat pump condenser. 24V common from furnace to brown wire (24V common) at heat pump condenser.
the red wire at the condenser (24V constant hot) is not required due to the fact that is just powers the defrost clock

Unless it is on of the new 410a systems. They won't run on cooling with out the red hooked to 24v

Simply install Carriers dual fuel thermostat. You won't need to add anything else except the outdoor temp sensor that is included with the T-stat. You can then choose options for gas heat lockout temp,at what temp would you want the heat pump to stop running and let the gas furnace take over. Plus you can see the outdoor temprature and humidity with a button push on the T-stat. If the gas furnace and heat pump were istalled together then you likely have a control box located close to the furnace with several relays and wiring to prevent heat pump and furnace operating at the same time. The new stat eliminates the need for these so you can cut all those items loose and prevent a source of emberassment and headache for a service tech that doesn't have strong troubleshooting skills.
Don't swap parts use your meter!

I agree with Tech One. You may need to add a transformer outside if you are adding a heat pump to a furnace and only have two conductor stat wire. Hearing that reversing valve cycle with the stat would be a call back.
