Condensing fan motor reversed

Postby silverfox52009 » Sat Jul 24, 2010 7:37 am

Gentlemen ,heres one for ya I went on an A/C call friday everything started up and appeared to be working fine, but when I went out to the condenser it was so hot you couldnt touch it. I noticed the fan was blowing out the sides and drawing in the top I thought someone replaced the blade and installed it bacwards. Upon taking it apart I observed the direction arrow on the motor and it is running in reverse. This is a single phase non reversable motor 230 volt Any Ideas?

A bad run capacitor can cause it to run backwards or someone reversed the wires on the capacitor. YES it can happen. :P Don't ask me why. :?: Has to do with the way split phase motors work and electrical theory. 8-)

I only encounter this issue when someones brother, brother-in-law, neighbor, ect.... try to repair someones unit, then they lie and say the unit hasn't been touched. They may have correctly spotted a failed capacitor, but in the midst of replacing it the got the start and run wires swapped.

Pretty sure the Goodman units have a dual cap, same one for herm and fan ;. pretty hard to mix them up. I might try a new motor and a matching cap if the motor doesnt do the trick

Try the dual run cap first. If it is starting to short internally then it may be the problem. Those are split phase motors and maybe the phase is not split correctly with a bad cap.
