Hi,
I found a cut on the side of the HVAC unit (approximately 6inX6in), where the plenum is. Hot air is blowing through it and obviously it was done by the original installer (I rent this apt.) Is this normal? What is it done for? Should I be concerned about it? Does it endanger my health in any way? Thank you in advance for your help.

It probably had a humidifier in it at one time.

Or they did it to heat the area. Put a piece of sheet metal or duct tape to cover the hole.
