New Heat Pump Problem - Help!

Postby jjdaniels » Wed Nov 30, 2011 11:08 pm

New Rheem Heat Pump install in basement with Emerson Thermostat. Turned heat on for first time in Georgia since its down to 37 degrees outside. New to heat pumps but I think I have a problem.

Thermostat is set to AUTO/Heat. Target temperature is 68 degrees and that is what T-stat reads. However, blower is blowing 52 degree air into the room. Drops room temperature to 66 degrees according to my own thermometer - Temp on T-stat doesn't budge off of 68 as my temp reading is going down. Once room hits 66 degrees, AUX kicks in on T-stat (even though T-stat still hasn't budged from 68 reading). Aux air blows 85 degrees warm until my thermometer and room heat back up. Aux kicks off, blower continues blowing but now blowing the 52 degree air again. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat every 20 minutes. Clearly T-stat knows it is getting colder, cuz it kicks Aux in at the same true temp every time.

Have original tech coming back out for 3rd time tomorrow.

I know Heat Pumps are different than furnaces, and 37 degrees outside make Heat Pumps perform less efficiently, but what the heck ....

Why does blower blow when T-stat says target temp reached and not calling for heat? My furnace shuts off and stops blowing when target temp reached.
If blowing, why blowing 52 degree air?
Why T-stat not changing temp reading but Aux kicking on and off as temp indeed goes down?

Logical answer would be defective T-stat, but this was 2nd brand we tried.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a heat pump compatible t stat set to heap pump mode? If so sounds as though you have issues with your outside unit maybe freon or defrost board issue needs looking into further.

It's a new system so there should be warranty coverage from the installer. There are many possibilities but the installer knows what he did so he's way ahead of us. If he doesn't fix it, ask for another tech from the installing company.

Has this system ever worked properly? If yes, what work was done before it started acting as it is now?

Thanks for replies and thoughts. Tech came today and clearly saw the problem that I was having. Diagnosed it as a "bad board". Did some "jumping" on the board and was able to create Stage 1 Heat to work properly in the interim while the new board is on order for a few days. All under warranty. When the Stage 1 turns off, fan continues to blow (hoping this is also a board issue), but at least it simply recirculates the insider air, not the 50 degree air like before. I'm just manually turning the system off when target temp is reached. Basement holds the temp for a good hour or so. I'll post results in a few days. Tech was surprised as he says Rheem is solid product for him, but he says every now an then he sees a puzzler which keeps him learning.
