Subj furnace turns on, and runs for a few seconds, then shuts down. It does not turn on the furnance fan or gas jets.

Is this a relay switch? Update, it is intermittent. It clicks to the relay which doesn't catch sometimes. Then one time it does catch and the furnace goes on. What could this be?

Help with name of the relay switch, and is this a complicated fix?

You need to watch the furnace go through several heating cycles. It could be gas valve solenoid (not likely) or ignition system... more likely.

You need to watch and listen carefully and write down what you hear... clank, flow of gas, ignition getting red to white hot (or sparking) depending on ignition system.

Once you know where the ignition process stops/fails, then it's easier to find the answer.
