Problems related to residential installations.

The furnace in my house is located on the 2nd floor. The thermostat is on the first floor. The upstairs is like an oven, and the downstairs is freezing. There are no dampers that I see to adjust the air floor. I am afraid to close vents on the 2nd floor because I have heard this may damage the furnace if I close too many vents. How can I get heat downstairs?
