Gas logs

Hello I just purchased a home a cpl mths ago, tonight I decide to try out the gas log fireplace which is the kind that has the valve in the floor that you use a key to turn it on with, when I go to turn it on it is already on to my surprise, so I press the ignite switch and can see it sparking but it doesnt light I hear nor smell any gas is it normal for there to be another cut off somewhere on the outside of the * My furnace also uses gas which has been working fine.
