gas leak?

I have a Trane gas furnace. The gas monoxide detector had started to beep when heat is first called for but would stop. It now beeps intermittently but not constant. It's reading 3500.
You can smell the gas from the outside but not internally. What might be causing this? Thank you anybody that can help.

well if your detector is going off it's doing its job isn't it? Know that you know the leak detector is doing its job wouldn't be a good time to call the gas company to inspect it? Then after thy red tag it, which they always do, you can more or less get ready to fork out some bucks for it,.

How old is the gas/carbon monoxide detector? You say... "You can smell the gas from the outside but not internally." Exactly what are you saying? Outside the house... outside the furnace... internally to what? Have you had any work done on the gas piping or furnace recently?

Try taking very soapy water and see if you can find the leak. Check each gas connection... elbows, unions... any place where two separate pieces of pipe meet. Slop the soapy solution on the junction and look for bubbles. Very slightly diluted liquid detergent is good for the soapy solution.

The detector may be reacting to CO, not the gas. Check that the flue is clear.
