gas leak?

I have a Carrier gas furnace. The gas monoxide detector had started to beep when heat is first called for but would stop. It now beeps intermittently but not constant. It's reading 3500.
You can smell the gas from the outside but not internally. What might be causing this? Thank you anybody that can help.

If you smell rotten eggs then you have a problem that needs to be addressed regardless of what the monixide detector is doing.
The monoxide detector doesn't detect unburnt natural gas so you ALSO seem to have a second problem with either monoxide from your furnace exchanger/venting, another gas appliance or have a faulty monoxide detecter.
