What's the best & fastest way to check if residential home system has enough refrigerent to run the sytem?

To add to Big's good response, you can check a sight glass, if it's available. That's a very effective and time saving method. However because a homeowner can also do that to know if a service call es necessary, many installers never add sight glasses to the system. Best place for a sight glass is just before the evaporator coil.

if it isnt cooling right is a pretty good indication.
